I. Love. This. Brand. The brainchild of Tara St. James, Study New York is a sustainable brand focused on pairing beautiful design with ethical materials and production. Not only a designer, Tara also has a ton of teaching and lecturing experience concentrated on corporate social responsibility and supply chain and has even lectured at Parsons. She has done a tremendous amount of research on sustainability in fashion and how to make ethical decisions, and continues to strive for more knowledge on the subject as she practices what she preaches. Study design is never compromised for sustainability, but rather enhanced by her passion for both the process and the finished product, making this label unique by having collaborations with global artisans such as partnering with local alpaca producers in Peru for her knitwear line. I love her twist on the classic chambray, especially the tonal shirtdress and the sheepskin shoe collaboration with Taller Nu, a Mexico-based company that pays local women living wages. From shoes to home goods to outerwear and ready-to-wear, Tara’s adept hand, and artistry, not to mention her degree in Menswear Tailoring, can be seen in each and every piece.

I first stumbled across First Shelter completely by accident in the Scoutmob Shoppe, but have since fallen in love with these hand-dyed beauties.  I am seriously obsessed and honestly mesmerized by these insanely gorgeous quilts.  Each is totally different, but has quilt-maker Christy Nelson’s unique stamp of artistry.  She calls the building blocks of First Shelter her “modern design sensibility combined with organic, hand-dyed materials.”  Her goal is to create pieces that are sustainable to the environment as well as cherished for generations.  Although her patterns are bent toward modern geometric shapes and angles, the craftsmanship and passion evident in each quilt comes from a long line of southern crafters, including her mom.  As if I didn’t already love these enough, it’s even better that the brand is born out of a family and has a great story.  What results are exquisite and fresh yet inviting quilts that you will want for yourself and your children, and your children’s children, and your children’s children’s children…you get the picture!

Kahoko is a textile brand whose story originates in Kenya’s rural Rift Valley, where local artisans have been honing their craft for generations.  Women are hand-dyeing, knitting, and weaving beautiful pieces that have translated into rugs, pillows, throws, sweaters and more.  Only local materials are used, and the fibers are dyed with botanical and vegetable derived colors from sustainably farmed plants. Kahoko takes local artisans and matches their expertise with different people around the world and is completely fair-trade.   Read more…

Taarik is an “innovative brand that connects consumers to artisans, by creating fashionable new designs using ancient artisanal techniques around the globe.” Their scarves are fashion forward while remaining true to the traditional process of design. You can read all about their process and artisans in both Ethiopia and India on their website. They partner with Project Ethiopia and Rural Development Foundation in India, both focusing their efforts on the education of young girls. Each scarf provides a school uniform, school supplies, and one year registration fee. Taarik is a beautiful example of slow fashion and connecting the consumer to the heartbeat behind the brand. Taarik says it best,  “empowering is our mission and fashion is our medium.” A truly cool brand with a beautiful heart to make a difference.
